Illustrations to the Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1849)
Return to list Adopt this bookDesigned and Etched by Felix O.C. Darley for the Members of the American Art-Union. One of the earliest examples of American fiction and still widely enjoyed today, the Legend of Sleepy Hollow was written by Washington Irving while he was staying in England. It tells the tale of Ichabod Crane, a Connecticut schoolmaster, who competes with the Brom Bones for the affections of the local beauty, Katrina von Tassel. He is pursued by the Headless Horsemen one evening and subsequently - mysteriously - disappears. An excellent choice for lovers of ghost stories.
