Ghost-Stories of an Antiquary (1904)

by M. R. James Return to list Adopt this book

Known as the originator of the "antiquarian ghost story" M.R. James writes in the preface, "…if any of them [stories] succeed in causing their readers to feel pleasantly uncomfortable when walking along a solitary road at nightfall... my purpose in writing them will have been attained." This collection, with illustrations by James McBryde, makes a great adoption for lovers of spine-tingling tales.

I use the British Library often for research, but I LOVE adopting books as gifts for people. My most recent adoption was in honor of my English professor in college. I am not just a literary scholar because of her influence--I am also a better human being.

My daughter and I both love the ambiance of the British Library and feel proud to be Readers. Supporting the Adopt a Book scheme is the least I can do.
