Influences from Gothic novels read by Dickens as a teenager can be seen in the gloomy atmosphere of Oliver Twist. This tale of the orphan Oliver and the dark criminal underworld of London shocked many readers when it was first published.

I use the British Library often for research, but I LOVE adopting books as gifts for people. My most recent adoption was in honor of my English professor in college. I am not just a literary scholar because of her influence--I am also a better human being.
