The fictional county of Wessex in the novels of Thomas Hardy is a thinly disguised portrait of the author’s native Dorset. During Hardy’s lifetime, technological and social changes were reshaping the rural landscape and customs from which his characters spring. This novel is often considered one of Hardy's greatest works.

I use the British Library often for research, but I LOVE adopting books as gifts for people. My most recent adoption was in honor of my English professor in college. I am not just a literary scholar because of her influence--I am also a better human being.
