The first novel by George Eliot is a tragic tale of seduction and deception set in rural Hayslope. Carpenter Adam Bede is in love with the beautiful Hetty Sorrel but Hetty is seduced by the local squire's son, Arthur Donnithorne. Hailed by her contemporaries as 'the masterpiece of the century' this is a perfect gift for literature fans.

I use the British Library often for research, but I LOVE adopting books as gifts for people. My most recent adoption was in honor of my English professor in college. I am not just a literary scholar because of her influence--I am also a better human being.
