(New Valentine's title) In 17th-century puritan Boston, Hester Prynne conceives a daughter through an affair. Alienated from society and forced to pay penance, she tries to lead a quiet, dignified life nonetheless. The themes of sin and legalism are explored in this tragedy of grand passion.

I use the British Library often for research, but I LOVE adopting books as gifts for people. My most recent adoption was in honor of my English professor in college. I am not just a literary scholar because of her influence--I am also a better human being.
