Pierce Egan (1772-1849) is often described as the first sporting journalist and author. Anecdotes of the turf was written in a light-hearted style and includes a lively collection of topical sporting news, stories and verses, interspersed with hand-coloured plates by the caricaturist Thomas Lane. Horse racing, hunting and boxing feature prominently, but rat-catching, billiards, wrestling, fishing, even a hopping match (pictured) and drunken marital squabbles, are all legitimate targets for his journalism.

I use the British Library often for research, but I LOVE adopting books as gifts for people. My most recent adoption was in honor of my English professor in college. I am not just a literary scholar because of her influence--I am also a better human being.

My daughter and I both love the ambiance of the British Library and feel proud to be Readers. Supporting the Adopt a Book scheme is the least I can do.
