by Walter Thom Return to list Adopt this book

Robert Barclay, better known as Captain Barclay, the great pedestrian of the 19th century walked 1,000 miles in 1,000 hours on Newmarket Heath in 1809. This rare book contains a full account of his feats and training methods and served as an important influence on athletics for many years.

I use the British Library often for research, but I LOVE adopting books as gifts for people. My most recent adoption was in honor of my English professor in college. I am not just a literary scholar because of her influence--I am also a better human being.

My daughter and I both love the ambiance of the British Library and feel proud to be Readers. Supporting the Adopt a Book scheme is the least I can do.
