Books to Adopt

The Topography and Natural History of Hampstead (1818)

by John James Park Return to list Adopt this book

Fascinating early 19th century descriptions of north London, including a rare map of the areas now occupied by Hampstead, Belsize Park, Primrose Hill, St John's Wood, Swiss Cottage & Kilburn (principally the modern London postal codes NW3, NW6 and NW8). The then village of Hampstead and Hampstead Heath occupies the top right hand quarter of the map, with all buildings in the village being marked. West Hampstead (then West End) is shown as a hamlet on the left hand side of the map. An ideal adoption for anyone interested in north London.

I use the British Library often for research, but I LOVE adopting books as gifts for people. My most recent adoption was in honor of my English professor in college. I am not just a literary scholar because of her influence--I am also a better human being.

My daughter and I both love the ambiance of the British Library and feel proud to be Readers. Supporting the Adopt a Book scheme is the least I can do.
