Stevenson wrote his allegorical novel after experiencing a nightmare, describing the story as ‘a fine bogey tale’. The powerful secret connection between the respectable Dr Jekyll and the detestable Mr Hyde is a major Gothic theme.

I use the British Library often for research, but I LOVE adopting books as gifts for people. My most recent adoption was in honor of my English professor in college. I am not just a literary scholar because of her influence--I am also a better human being.
