Beautiful Science: Picturing Data, Inspiring Insight
20 February – 26 May 2014
Our Beautiful Science exhibition explores how our understanding of ourselves and the planet has evolved alongside our ability to represent, graph, and map the mass data of the time. From John Snow’s plotting of the 1854 London cholera infections on a map, to a colourful digital tree of life, this exhibition will demonstrate how picturing scientific data provides new insight into our lives.
The exhibition has been made possible by the generous sponsorship of Winton Capital Management.
We thank the Folio Society for their ongoing support of our temporary exhibition space, the Folio Society Gallery.

Early photography of Burma
Irrawaddy Literary Festival, Mandalay 14 – 16 February 2014
We hold some of the most important Burmese collections outside of the country including 2,000 manuscripts, 20,000 printed books and many early photographs as well as records from the India Office.
With support from Prudential we will be sharing the collections with the Burmese public through a display of facsimile photographs at the Irrawaddy Literary Festival, held in Mandalay. The exhibition will explore Burma, its people and history and the photos will highlight the country’s beautiful architecture and archaeological sites.
A second display will illustrate the development of publishing including early dictionaries and alphabets. After the festival both themed exhibitions will move to the University Central Library in Rangoon where it will go on temporary display.
