Anglo-Saxons

19 October 2018 – 19 February 2019

The British Library will be staging a major exhibition on the history, literature and culture of the Anglo-Saxons in 2018–19. This exhibition will draw on the Library’s exceptionally strong collection of Anglo-Saxon manuscripts, together with a range of major loans of manuscripts and objects, to present the first national exhibition on the Anglo-Saxons for a generation. It will be the greatest single exhibition ever mounted of Anglo-Saxon books and documents covering the whole period from the sixth to the eleventh centuries.

This landmark exhibition will use unique handwritten books and documents to explore the history of the English people and the English language from the earliest period of the migrations to the Norman Conquest and beyond. It will feature two of the greatest treasures of the Library’s collection, the Lindisfarne Gospels and the St Cuthbert Gospel, alongside an exceptional display of later Anglo-Saxon gospel-books and psalters, which will enable us to show the highlights of later Anglo-Saxon illuminated manuscript production.
