We wanted a special birthday gift for our friend Dawn. We chose Charlie & the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl because she loves books, adores chocolate and has two daughters. The Library's gift certificate arrived within a few days, but we wanted Dawn to have a present to unwrap on her birthday too. So we bought her a nice secondhand copy of the book, and tucked the gift certificate inside it. Now she has a permanent reminder of the donation, and a classic book to share with her kids.

We like to think that our small contribution towards preserving the unique material kept in the British Library, particularly the medieval manuscripts, connects us to the great scholars and writers of the past - Bede, Aelfric, Marie de France - and to the collectors and bibliophiles who ensured that their works were passed down to us and continue to enrich our culture. We in turn owe it to future generations to continue this great work of preservation and just being a small part of that seems incredibly worthwhile.
