    • When I think of the immeasurable benefits that the Christian gospel has brought to Britain, and this incredible link with one of its first evangelists, it makes me feel very grateful for our heritage, and so I'm pleased to play a small part in keeping this priceless volume in the country. Thank you British Library for your unremitting efforts in doing so, and for your excellent website that gives access to your treasures to many people in far-off places.

    • I visit the Library now and again, and it should properly be the place for this book to reside. Although I'm retired and not wealthy I try to donate where I can, and it is vital that such precious items as this do not go abroad.

    • I have always loved books. As a child my nose was often in a book, sometimes when I should have been doing something else. St Cuthbert, and Durham Cathedral, are quite special for me for many and varied reasons. To be able to see St Cuthbert's Gospel will be really really special. Works such as this must be preserved in this country for future generations. The British Library presents its treasures so well both in exhibitions on site and through its digitising projects. Long may this continue.

    • I have just completed an Oxford DPhil in medieval history, so I regard all manuscripts of this age as special. However, this one is very special because I grew up in Northumberland and knew stories of St Cuthbert from childhood. This book is an important part of our cultural heritage and must stay in the BL.

    • Hello British Library. I am from Germany. Let me congratulate you to your new website. Well done indeed! I have a special relationship with the British Library because I am a bibliophile scholar who has studied English literature and who has lived in Wales for eleven years. London is one of my favourite cities in the world and the British Library one of my favourite places. Adopting a book is a great idea, and I will do that. I learnt Middle English so I am very interested in the manuscripts. Again: super usable website, fantastisch.

    • Trained as a Medieval scholar, but working as an engineer at the US space agency, NASA, I am delighted to reach back to my academic roots and support that which I love. I am proud to have spent hours poring over manuscripts in the reading room myself, and hope that my small donation can make it possible for new generations of scholars to preserve and examine the unique treasure that is the St Cuthbert Gospel.

    • As a librarian I feel it is important to support the British Library, in particular the purchase of the Cuthbert Gospel, one of the most important books in the country. It is of immense importance that this book remains in the UK for all to see.

Please share your stories with us - we'd love to hear why you have chosen to give to the British Library.
