Maps provide a fascinating insight into our history, and I marvel at the skill of the early mapmakers. My own collection is constantly on view at home, and they always provide a focus for discussions. I am very grateful to the British Library for looking after our heritage, in the form of old maps.

The Library's ethos, principles and ambitions strike a chord with me; the services on offer are the practical demonstration of what the place is about.

I have had a lifelong love of books and feel that the British Library is an inspiring place and well worthy of support, particularly at a time when funding for the arts in general appears to be under threat.

I cannot remember a time when books were not central to my life. The BL is guardian of a priceless common heritage which can enrich the lives of future generations, as it has done for us. Cherish the verbal record in good times and bad!

My mother- in -law was a very talented artist and book binder. She rebound many books, and supporting the conservation of beautiful books is a very fitting way to celebrate her life

The British Library is one of the most beautiful and inspiring places in England. Sadly, I'm leaving the UK to return home to Australia and wanted to make a contribution that would ensure others can feel inspired to open the pages of a book and enter a new world of knowledge.

A book by H E Bates changed my life forever. The pen truly is mightier than the sword and words can take you to a place no other medium can ever reach. I read to enjoy and, most importantly, to escape. Books are our escape from reality and our anchor back to our life.

I love books and english literature. And I love Jane Austen. I think we could have been great friends, and friends give support and hug each other. Thank you for this unmissable chance.
