- Our family made donations to the Conservation programme in memory of my mum who was an avid reader and loved Jane Austen, cookery books, travel books, and more.

- While coming to interview someone at the British Library last year I happened to notice a poster about adopting a book. It struck a chord with me as I had recently lost my father and was looking for ways to pay tribute to him, particularly as my Dad had donated his body to research and I wanted something tangible to dedicate to his memory. By chance I had also visited Highgate Cemetery and the grave of George Eliot a few weeks previously. So when the Adopt-a-Book team said her novel Daniel Deronda was available for adoption I snapped it up.

- The history of Christianity in Britain during the Anglo-Saxon and medieval periods is a foundation of our culture, and I simply wanted to support the Library's efforts to secure the St Cuthbert Gospel.

- For many years we have been regular visitors to Holy Island and are familiar with the St Cuthbert story. I feel very strongly that the Gospel should remain in Britain and that as many people as possible should be able to see this great work of art and scholarship.

- On 4 January 2012, I heard the BBC Radio 4 programme ‘In Our Time: The Written World'. I am very keen on Anglo-Saxon work and our nation's history, and as a Christian I feel I must support the appeal to save the St Cuthbert Gospel. When the book is digitised it will give so many people access to this unique object.

- The British Library is the number once place I visit when I come down to London from the north. I think that the holdings, and exhibitions that allow public access, are tremendously important. I want to support the purchase of the St Cuthbert Gospel because the story of the Saint is breathtaking and this volume is of great value to Britain.

- My daughter is passionate about Tudor history so adopting ‘The History of Margaret of Anjou, Queen of England’ is a wonderful way to connect her with the materials from this period.

- A colleague gave me an "adopt a book" gift years ago. I had never heard of the scheme and was delighted to help conserve Virginia Woolf's "To the Lighthouse". As an ex English teacher, I greatly appreciate the conservation work carried out at the British Library.
