The exhibition

Magna Carta is one of the most celebrated documents in English history. The Library holds two of the four extant 1215 copies of Magna Carta. As part of the 800th anniversary of the granting of the charter we will be taking part in a year-long celebration including our landmark exhibition 'Law, Liberty, Legacy' opening in March 2015. As well as exploring the origination of the charter, our exhibition will encourage visitors to consider what Magna Carta means in the present day and what a Great Charter for the 21st century might contain.

A year of celebration

The year begins with the coming together of the four existing 1215 charters, from Lincoln Cathedral, Salisbury Cathedral and the Library's copies for a four day celebration of custodianship, scholarship and public event in early February.

How your gifts will help

As well as funding the conservation of the Library's Magna Cartas and other historic documents being put on display, gifts support the associated learning and events programme. 2015 will leave an important legacy for the nation and as the Library's two copies of Magna Carta will be re-mounted and permanently re-housed in a new display in our Treasures gallery following the 'Law, Liberty, Legacy' exhibition.

Play your part in the Magna Carta legacy

Our Magna Carta exhibition and activities are being made possible by working alongside partners, funders and individuals who want to play a part in this historic moment. We still require funding to support the ongoing conservation and curation in preparation for the exhibition and to make it one of the most truly memorable exhibitions the Library will stage. Please consider supporting this legacy activity.
